Earth Safe Finishes Generation Green are the finest non toxic water based products available on the market. They have a wonderful array of products for the gourd artist and other crafters. Some of their products that we carry include:

Both of the gourds pictured below were done with a combination of Shimmer Translucent and Shimmer Opaque. The one on the right, the background was done with 4 different shades of Shimmer Translucent. I also used black gourd ink dyes. The gourd on the left has a base coat of Shimmer Opaque Bronze and then gold. The Iguana was done with amethyst and gold shimmer Translucent as well as the new black Shimmer Opaque.

Shimmer Opaque (formerly Opulence) is a pure, strong, rich, bold Pearlescent gel medium that can be added to any medium including paint, varnish, and ink dye. It can add texture and vibrancy to any surface. It can be painted, rubbed, sponged, fauxed or troweled onto just about any surface. Shimmer Opaque was used on the "Ancients" (pictured on the right) robes for added color and brilliance.

Shimmer Translucent (formerly Metallic Gel Glaze) can be used individually or with multiple colors and it will add a gorgeous glow of color. Because it is transparent and does not change the colors already added several colors can be added on top of each other. Instead of canceling out previous colors, it just enhances the color is below it. You can also mix Stewart Superior Inks to intensify the color, making it less transparent. Shown above left are two gourds using multiple layers of Shimmer translucent. As you can see each one is slightly different. Adding layers of color do not cancel the previous layer out but add to it and in each of these I started with different base colors and added different colors in each layer. They make wonderful ornaments in addition to gourdeous gourds! We carry the NEW shimmer translucent'...It differs from the old one in that this has no VOC’s and is white but dries clear. It is a little different to apply in that it looks more “rubbery” but smooth's and softens as it is worked in.

Shimmer Opaque and Translucent can be applied with a bristle or foam brush, rag, pallet knife, or sponge. May mix colors together for a marbled look. When applying to glass, work on underside so Shimmer Opaque can show through the glass. When working with gourds, the best way to apply Shimmer Opaque and Translucent is with a cosmetic sponge. If texture is not desired you soften with a cloth.

The shimmers can be used together and mixed with our Jo Sonja paints and mediums as well as with the Memories ink dyes to create some wonderful effects.

SHIMMER OPAQUE 2 oz size Shimmer Opaque is a rich, vibrant and white Pearlescent gel medium that is opaque. They can also be mixed with Memories Ink Dyes or Jo Sonja paints to create endless colors. Shimmer Opaque can be applied with a foam brush, sponge, finger, or bristle brush and can hold its texture when dry. Simply scoop out a small amount and spread to get the desired effects. For a blended look apply 2 or more colors while wet. Easy to use on any surface including clothing and will not wash off. Add a little glitter for more pizzazz. Sponge it lightly on a gourd or other material for a faux raku effect or paint it on the backside of a glass plate so the vibrancy shows through the glass. You can use Jo Sonja brush on polyurethane satin varnish or American spray finish to seal and protect your art. The Jo Sonja really makes the shimmers pop. For more working time, add a little Extender. Non-toxic, contains no VOC's. Clean with soap and water. The Gold Shimmer Opaque may be used to create a faux gold leaf. Brush on the Gold Shimmer, let dry and then go over it with any Colorant to achieve the beautiful variegated gold leaf look. I suggest that Shimmer Opaque be protected with one of Earth Safe Finishes high quality varnishes for the best durability. If more working time is desired, add a little of Generation Green Extender for slower drying. Conforms to ASTM D4236. Directions for Use: Apply with a brush, sponge, finger or any type of utensil desired. Start out with a light coat until you achieve the look you want. May add 10% water to thin for a less textured look or may just soften with a soft cloth or brush. Although there is adequate time to “play” with the Shimmer Translucent, it is best to work as quickly as possible. You can also add extender to prolong the working time.
