Basswood

Sawdust Connection carries a variety of basswood products suitable for woodburning, chip carving, wood carving, wood turning and other crafts.

When I started burning I was not happy with the quality of the Walnut Hollow basswood found in craft stores and many woodcraft shops so I searched all over the best quality basswood and plywood for burning my projects. When I started teaching classes it was imperative that I have suitable materials for my students to use in classes. I have finally found some great sources for wood, both for the items Al makes (napkin holders, bread board, cheese boards, etc) and for the bark boards used in classes.

All of the wood products Al makes, bark boards and Italian poplar are primarily used by me and in my classes. I do make these items available on my website but prices are a bit higher due to the high cost of shipping.

NOTICE ABOUT ITALIAN POPLAR PLYWOOD

Italian Poplar plywood is a plywood imported from Italy. It is normally cream colored with a very fine grain. It is generally used for woodburning, airplane kits and scroll saw projects.

Over the years the Italian Poplar coming into this country has fluctuated in quality. For years the Italian Poplar was clear and beautiful. Several years ago the sheets being imported were heavily spalted (black marks) and we decided to stop selling it. About 4 years ago we found a distributor who carried Italian Poplar and they agreed to let us go through the sheets pick out the sheets we wanted.

When we relocated to New Mexico the local distributor also agreed to allow us to hand pick the sheets before delivery. It was a very time consuming process but we were able to ensure the best quality. The last few orders that came in were badly spalted and knotted so we refused them.

Normally dealers order the sheets and they are delivered without anyone looking at them. They cut them and turn around selling them as is regardless of the quality. We don't do business like that and I personally won't settle for mediocre which is why we inspected each and every sheet before accepting delivery. It's very time consuming and lately not very satisfying. While other dealers are willing to accept whatever they get, we won't. We're not in business to sell products that are inferior quality just to make money. Rather than going through this frustration with every order we have decided to discontinue Italian Poplar permanently once our inventory is gone.

We apologize for this inconvenience but we refuse to sell inferior quality products.

Northern basswood bark boards are kiln dried, clear, light (almost white) colored, thick, sanded, northern basswood. These are winter cut (white and bark that does not easily fall off) and do not have black marks on them like the Walnut Hollow! Hand-made wood bread & cheese boards made from basswood, maple and birch. These items made by us and are perfect for carving, burning and other crafts. We are going to continue to make these as special orders but will no longer carrying them in stock. If you wish to order them please contact us.
